Label every sample family and keep production variation visible.

  1. Write the decision.State whether the trial is selecting a method, confirming a format, proving a changeover or supporting acceptance.
  2. List the complete pack.Include product, primary container, closure, seal, label, code and any secondary packaging that affects handling.
  3. Select normal and difficult samples.Use the smallest, largest, least stable or otherwise limiting formats that are genuinely in scope.
  4. Record product condition.Document temperature, preparation, viscosity or other behaviour that changes the process.

Acceptance evidence

Separate compatibility testing from sustained production acceptance.

An early trial may confirm that a product can be filled, a cap can be applied or a label can be dispensed. It may not prove automatic feeding, long-term output, cleaning, site interfaces or every format. Record what the trial proves and what remains for factory acceptance testing, commissioning or site acceptance testing.

For each observation, keep the tested configuration and condition attached to the result. A conclusion from one product temperature or label material should not silently become a claim for the entire range.

Transfer the agreed trial outcome into the FAT, SAT and commissioning plan and the project brief.

How many samples are needed for a packaging machine trial?

The sample quantity must be sufficient to set the machine, test the normal and difficult formats, observe stable running and restart, and repeat the agreed quality checks without exhausting material. There is no single quantity that is correct for every machine or application.

Agree the trial sequence first, then calculate the product and components needed for each step plus a sensible allowance for set-up and rejected samples. A few ideal packs rarely provide enough evidence for an automatic line.

Should product supplied for a machinery trial match production conditions?

Product supplied for a machinery trial should match the intended production condition as closely as practical, including temperature, viscosity, aeration, particle distribution and any preparation or settling that changes behaviour. Differences must be recorded so conclusions are not applied outside the tested condition.

Where the formulation is still changing, identify the provisional properties and the range the machine may need to handle. A later confirmation trial may be required.
