Automated pallet labelling combines variable-data printing, controlled pallet positioning, label application and verification at the point where the logistics unit is ready to identify.
Identify the logistics unit
The data requirement comes first. Confirm the identifier, human-readable information, barcode format, customer rule and data source for each logistics unit. GS1 UK guidance states that pallet logistics labels should include an SSCC encoded in GS1-128 and that two identical labels are used on adjacent sides for a pallet application.
Use the current customer and GS1 requirements for the actual project. The GS1 UK page on where pallet labels should be placed is an authoritative starting point; final label content, dimensions and placement need to match the supply-chain requirement.
The machine must then reach the required faces while keeping the print engine, applicator, pallet and people within a safe, serviceable layout.

Data association can fail even when the label prints correctly. Define the point at which the pallet record becomes active, how the pallet is tracked to the applicator and what happens if a pallet is removed, reversed, delayed or replaced. Prevent the next record from advancing until the previous pallet's outcome is confirmed.
Use a controlled reject or hold state for an unreadable or missing label. The operator needs a safe method to inspect, reprint and reconcile the affected logistics unit without creating a duplicate identity.

Pallet flow is rarely perfectly uniform. Define the response to a missing pallet, incomplete load, damaged wrap, shifted load, unreadable existing label, reversed pallet or a pallet removed between data assignment and application. The system should hold or reconcile the record rather than silently advancing to the next SSCC.
Where two labels are required, confirm whether the machine applies both during one stop, through pallet rotation or through a moving applicator arrangement. The layout must allow the required faces to be reached while preserving conveyor control, guarding, access and scanner visibility.
Agree where the pallet record originates, when it becomes final and which system records successful labelling. Production, warehouse and IT teams may each own part of the workflow. A clear boundary prevents a mechanically successful label from being released with an unconfirmed dispatch record.
Include manual recovery. Operators need a defined method to hold the pallet, inspect the data, remove or cover an invalid label where permitted, request an authorised reprint and confirm the final result before release.

Pallet identity
Pallet labelling is an identity and handling task as well as a print-and-apply operation.
Define how the pallet is detected and stopped or tracked, which system supplies the label data, which faces require labels and what confirms successful application. Account for load overhang, wrap condition, board movement, irregular surfaces and the distance between print and application.
Use the inspection and reject guide to specify failed-read and uncertain-pallet responses. A pallet may need to stop, recirculate or move to a controlled review position rather than a small-pack reject bin.
A pallet label is linked to the correct load by a controlled identity event, data source and tracking sequence that remain associated until printing and application are confirmed. The project should define what creates the pallet identity and what happens if the label or load is removed, delayed or reintroduced.
A pallet labelling system may apply to more than one face using movement of the applicator, pallet or repeated stations, but the required geometry and cycle must be confirmed. Provide pallet dimensions, load variation, conveyor position and the exact label faces and placement windows for engineering review.
