Print-and-apply labelling machines

Print-and-apply equipment creates a label from live or selected data and applies it to a controlled product, case or logistics unit in one automated sequence.

Choose the process

Use print-and-apply when the label content changes by product, batch, order or logistics unit.

A conventional label applicator normally dispenses a pre-printed label. Print-and-apply adds an on-demand printing stage and therefore needs reliable data, print quality, label handling, product detection, application and verification.

Define the data owner before selecting hardware. Identify which system creates the product code, batch, date, barcode, shipping reference or serial identifier; how the record reaches the machine; and what happens if data is missing, late or rejected.

The application method depends on product motion, label size, surface, available gap and required contact. Representative products and final label stock should be tested because corrugation, dust, curvature, temperature and surface energy can affect adhesion.

Application choice

Match the applicator action to the product and line geometry.

Contact application

Wipe or roll-on methods can suit products moving past the applicator where the label can be progressively applied to a controlled surface.

Presented-pad application

A tamp or similar presented-pad action can place a label onto a stationary or predictably positioned surface with a controlled approach.

Non-contact or extended reach

Air-assisted or extended mechanisms may be considered where direct access, gap or surface condition makes a simple wipe unsuitable. Final suitability needs a sample trial.

Integrate print-and-apply with product flow and business data.

The labeller needs a stable product window. Irregular spacing can cause an applicator to miss the surface or apply while the product is moving unpredictably. Use the handling and conveyor guidance and controls guide to define detection, tracking and downstream confirmation.

Data responsibilities should remain visible. The machine can print the record it receives, but the project must define who owns the source data, who approves label formats and how changes are controlled. Test live data paths where possible rather than relying only on manually entered examples.

Qualify the label media and printed result together.

Label material, adhesive, liner, die cut, roll direction and storage condition affect both printing and application. Confirm that the label releases cleanly from the liner, remains flat on the application pad or path and adheres to the product through the required handling and storage environment.

Print quality depends on the selected print technology, ribbon or other consumable where applicable, print-head condition, speed, darkness settings, label surface and barcode design. Use the final artwork and representative variable data in the trial. A sample that prints readable text may still fail the required barcode verification method.

Control reprints and duplicate identities

Define who may request a reprint, how the original failed label is accounted for and how the system prevents the same serial or logistics identity being applied to two physical units. Reprint handling is part of traceability and should be tested alongside missing-label and unreadable-code faults.

When the line changes format, reconcile the active label design, data record, label roll and product. A correct print applied to the wrong product is a data-association failure even if the applicator performs perfectly.

Label identity

A print-and-apply system must associate the authorised label data with the correct case, product or handling unit before release.

Can a print-and-apply label be verified before application?

A printed label can be read or checked before application, but that does not prove it was applied to the correct pack or remained readable afterwards. Where identity risk requires it, combine pre-application print control with post-application pack association and verification.

What should happen after a failed print-and-apply label?

The defined response should contain the affected label and pack, prevent an unverified unit entering the good flow and record or reconcile the failure. The exact sequence depends on whether the failure occurred before printing, after printing, during application or during downstream verification.
